The
Secret is out Russo's is the fishermen's Choice for Frank's Tract
angler's
This
is the second of a series of articles on Delta area Resorts and
Hideaways some offer better fishing than others and some just
a secluded. get away in our own backyard. Caswell Memorial State
park was a fun location, but this time I wanted to check out a
resort that has been undergoing some tremendous improvements over
the past couple of years. Russo’s Marina on Bethel Island
is is a hidden often overlooked camping and boat access location
on the Nationally Famous Frank’s Tract. Yes, clean full
hook-ups sites superior boat access and the On-the-water location
of the Hook Line and Sinker highlight this resort.Russo's Office
I
have experienced many big events out of Russo’s the past
couple of years and have always been impressed with their helpful
outgoing staff and ever continuing improvements. This is simply
one of the cleanest Resorts in the area. Here are some of the
many amenities. Clean Showers and Restrooms, a huge change from
Caswell State, level newly poured pads, with full hookups available.
The Sites don’t have the Dense shade of Caswell they are
perfect for today’s rv/fishing enthusiast on one of the
Delta most fertile fisheries
The resort
is located on Bethel Island’s Piper Slough close to fast
water access, great fishing for Black Bass, Stripers, Sturgeon,
panfish and catfish. Bethel Island has planty of restaurants,
stores within minutes. As I mentioned before, big changes have
taken place here. During the past three years there have been
vast improvements. One resident couple mentioned, “It has
gone from sand pit to first class resort as Chuck Russo has worked
with Gene Bucholz of the Hook line and Sinker. Bucholz said, “Dan
you know I have experienced some real headaches over the years
working with Dupont at Big Break. This is by far the best situation
I could be in as Chuck (Russo) has really worked hard to bring
events here and provide consistent improvements to the resort.
I couldn’t be happier with the situation here’.
Fly
casting expert Dan Blanton shared some of his thoughts the popularity
of fly casting for stripers in the area, " I can't tell you
how many fish over 20 pounds fly fishers, including me, have taken.
Lost count of the teeners this last season alone and Mike Costello
has gotten his clients four over 30 this season - one a 42. Twenty
or more fish days, even in winter are common”. Blanton and
I did this twice last week. Blanton continued, “Each year
I've managed fish over 30 lbs on flies, lots over 20 and last
year I lost a 40 plus right at the boat - and so on. Indeed, good
fly anglers don't take a second seat to any method except in water
deeper than 20 feet with strong currents”. Blanton adds,
“I've often said I'd rather have a poor fly angler aboard
when guiding than a poor lure angler. The fly line keeps the fly
down despite poor techniques. Conversely, a poor jig or trapper
that can't drop, pause, fade the lure to keep it down, often doesn't
catch many fish. There is no handicap to fly fishing for stripers
and often we'll outfish everything including live bait”.
Beautiful
covered picnic area surrounded by more campsites perfect for your
clubs and friends to reserve for the weekend.
